Immerse yourself in the Budapest art scene, work with local artists and expand your practice.

BARTR hosts 3-month long sessions with 10-15 residents at one time. Our aim is to facilitate cross-cultural exchange between visiting and local artists, create opportunities for future cooperation, and provide a supportive, inspiring environment for new experiences within the unique cultural context of Budapest.

We welcome artists and creative researchers across mediums but particularly focus on sound art and printmaking- in line with the expertise of our team and the contemporary cultural scene in Budapest.

Each session is slightly different, and the direction is partially dictated by the group of residents chosen. The urban and open structure remains constant. We encourage and facilitate collaboration with local artists, studios, and civil organisations.

Studios are located in separate locations throughout central Budapest. They are selected according to the needs of the residents and organised through various partnerships with cultural centres, civil society organisations, independent businesses, and arts organisations. Residents share studios with other participants with similar mediums.

The second part of the residency is left to self-directed work and preparation for the final exhibition.

The first half of each session is taken up by a workshop program directed by artists and professionals active in the local scene. Each session is slightly different, however, a strong focus on sound art and independent print remains constant. As an example, last year’s print workshops included risograph, silkscreen, and zine making in the context of Central Eastern Europe. The sound workshops explored diverse approaches to sound art – combining DIY electronics (music instrument building, insight into basics of electronics, soldiering), with radio, podcasting, and aural landscapes. You can see the results of the 2019 workshops here: a podcast and print book.
